Bruce Lee Floored by a Single Blow

General

Imagine reading a headline like that, during the height of your career, whip your popularity is of its peak and the world believes you invincible, well that's exactly what Bruce Lee read during the morning of March 20th 1973, and as you can imagine he wasn't very happy about it. The article was supposedlyYip written by Yip Chun, son of Bruce's Wing Chun instructor Yip Man, and detailed a battle that had taken place between Bruce and another youth named Yeung Yat Fung during the 1950's.  The basic gist of the story is that Bruce had challenged Yeung to a fight and after a suitable location was decided Bruce and Yeung squared off to fight. After a long pause Bruce threw out a straight punch at Yeung, which missed Yeung completely, this gave Yeung an opening and he threw a strike back, which put Bruce down. Bruce quickly got to his feet and without saying a word, turned and walked away. On March 17th , the Hong Kong based English newspaper The Star published the first of a four part article, entitled "The Bruce Lee Story" by Yip Chun, the first three parts dealt with some of the past events involving Bruce and his instructor Yip Man, however the fourth instalment on March 20th had the sub-heading "The day Bruce was floored with one blow".

Training With the Dragon

General

bruce_tedAfter Bruce Lee died, I remained quiet for a number of years. But in the past few years, I have started to get a little more actively involved in the martial arts and jeet kune do. I had always wanted to teach the martial arts someday, but during those years, I felt I was still learning and still training. But I think after 20some years, I have paid my dues and put my time into it. I have found that people really want to learn the original art and what Bruce Lee taught when he was alive. That's the reason I'm teaching now.

Bruce Lee's Nunchaku

Martial Arts

Fist_ChuksAside from being skilled in hand to hand combat, Bruce Lee was very skilled in his use of weapons, an aspect of his training that was often overlooked. Bruce Lee was very proficient in the use of many weapons, however the one he was most associated with was the nunchaku.Bruce first began using the nunchaku in the early sixties when his friend and most senior student, Dan inosanto introduced him to the Filipino martial art of Kali.

The first of Bruce's films showing him use the nunchaku was 'Fist of Fury', in which he despatched an entire gang of japanese kareteka in their dojo.
In this scene, Bruce doesn't only use the nunchaku whilst standing but also whilst lying down; striking out at the opponents ankles. The nunchaku also play a significant role during the final battle with 'Suzuki' and if you look very closely you will notice that Bruce is blinking rapidly; a dead giveaway that the film was speeded up. (This was because Bruce was still a relative novice with the nunchaku at this time) Incidentally the green labelled 'Rank' video release of 'Fist of Fury' released during the early eighties contained all of the afore mentioned scenes. They were later cut from subsequent releases by the British board of Film Censors.
